Another problem many vape users encounter is e-liquid leaks. In this article, we will take a look at the most common causes of leaking and how we can fix or prevent them. There are four common causes of leaking, as shown in the diagram below. We will go over them one by one.
Overfilled tank or pods
The very first cause, and the most common one, of leaks is overfilled tanks or pods. Every tank or pod has a designated max fill line, usually identified by a line or mark at the side of your pod or tank. When refilling your tank or pod, do not fill it beyond the max fill line. By design, these containers should have an air pocket to allow the e-liquid to freely flow. Filling it to the brim could cause the e-liquid to leak through the mouthpiece or airflow. Always make sure to fill within its max fill line. In case there's no visible fill line, just leave a gap for the air pocket.
Loose, misaligned, or broken seal
To prevent the e-liquid from leaking, pods and tanks use a rubber seal, called O-rings, to keep the liquid contained. These seals can get loose and misaligned when parts of the vape are not assembled or screwed properly. This creates a gap where e-liquids can leak.
To prevent this, always make sure that all the device's parts are tucked in properly. Make sure all screws are tight. You can also bring your device to the manufacturer's designated repair centers to fix any misalignment and replace broken seals.
Worn or Damaged Coils
As the coil wears out over time, its ability to seal off the e-liquid weakens. That is why monitoring your coil's condition is a must. When you see that your coil seems to be too wet than it should be, check if it is seated properly or if it's still in good condition. If not, replace it immediately.
E-liquid and Coil Mismatch
Another cause of leaks is when the type of e-liquid used mismatches the coil you have. Check the table below to see the right e-liquid to coil configuration standard.

Using freebase e-liquids with high resistance coils would not burn the e-liquid properly. This will cause the coil to be oversaturated and leaks could happen. On the other hand, using nicotine salt e-liquid with low resistance coils would burn it easily, shortening the life of your coil and could eventually cause leaks.
Take note that not every liquid matches your coil. Always check your coils recommended VG/PG range, usually indicated in its packaging, and match your e-liquid accordingly.
Excessive Heat and Pressure
Leaving your device in hot surfaces, warm pocket, or hot car, will expose your tank or pod to too much heat. This can cause the air in it to expand which can potentially damage the seals in your pod or tank, leading to leaks. Avoid exposing your device to too much heat and pressure. When not in use, make sure it is stored in room temperature. Another tip is to avoid filling up your pod or tank too much. This is to give room for the air to expand when exposed to heat inevitably.
Other Causes
There are other factors to consider that can cause leaks. Device damage due to fall or strong impact, bad usage habits, and even factory defects. The key here is vigilance. Always check your device before using it and address any signs of leak you see.
Other Tips
The general rule is to take good care of your device. Here are some other tips we can share to prevent leaks:
- Follow maintenance guidelines.
- Avoid dropping it. Keep it in your bag when you need to move around.
- Keep it stored properly when not in use. Don't store it on its side or upside down.
- Use a shockproof bag or pouch when storing it.
- Do not ever attempt to disassemble the device just to fix leaks. Remember, New Zealand prohibits modification.
- For consistent leaks, consult your manufacturer.
Final Warning
Leaks don't only mean that the e-liquid is leaking out. It could also mean contamination. Harmful substances and bacteria can enter the tank or pod through these leaks. When you notice a leak, stop using the device until it is fixed. Safety should always be the priority.
